Depthmap Adjustment Controls

The adjustment controls reshape the initialized relative-depth information. They do not add measured three-dimensional data, but they can make the available grayscale range more useful and create a predictable final canvas.

Near Clip and Far Clip

Near Clip and Far Clip select a portion of the initialized depth range and remap it across the full grayscale output. The controls cannot cross, so a usable range always remains.

Tighter clipping increases contrast between the retained depths, but it discards distinctions outside the selected range. Watch for large areas collapsing to solid black or white.

Depth Curve

Depth Curve redistributes grayscale values within the retained range without changing their basic depth order. Use the relief preview to check whether the adjustment makes slopes too abrupt or causes important depth differences to become too flat.

Invert Depth

By default, black represents farther and white represents closer. Invert Depth changes the convention so black represents closer and white represents farther. Inversion updates the grayscale depthmap, perimeter padding depth, brush preview, Depth Palette display, depth legend, and exported PNG.

Linked artwork dimensions

Width and Height define the pixel dimensions of the proportional artwork area before border padding is added. Editing either dimension automatically recalculates the other from the initialized aspect ratio, preventing the image from being stretched.

Resizing changes how the existing depth information is sampled. Enlarging the image creates more pixels, but it cannot recover detail that the depth model did not infer from the source image.

Perimeter border

Far-Depth Border on Every Side adds the selected number of pixels to all four sides of the artwork. Perimeter Padding Depth initially follows the lowest existing height in the depthmap and continues to follow it as other depth adjustments change. Moving the Farther-to-Closer slider replaces that automatic value with the depth you select. Final width and height each increase by twice the border size. The border limit adjusts automatically so neither final canvas dimension exceeds 8192 pixels.

Use the border when the depthmap needs a predictable background that can be aligned with other geometry in the finished project. Leave Perimeter Padding Depth at its automatic value to extend the lowest surface already present, or adjust it when the surrounding geometry requires a different relative depth.

Grayscale preview and relief projection

The grayscale preview contains the actual relative-depth data and is also the surface used for manual painting. The relief projection calculates directional shading from neighboring depth values so slopes and forms are easier to see. This simulated lighting can make an area appear brighter or darker without changing its underlying depth, so use the relief projection as an inspection aid rather than a grayscale value reference.
