Using LightBurn Material Libraries

A Material Library supplies the actual LightBurn cut settings attached to exported layers.

Start with LightBurn's library workflow

LightBurn's official Material Library documentation explains how to open the Library window, create presets from layers, organize entries, and assign or link presets. Learn those fundamentals first if Material Libraries are new to you.

Matching for guests and saved palettes

For a freshly uploaded guest library, select the material Rasterizer should search. Each enabled Rasterizer swatch name must match the Description of an entry within that material; its geometry is placed on a LightBurn layer configured with that entry's cut settings. The entry may use any LightBurn thickness value.

Signed-in users can import one chosen material into a Color Palette and create explicit assignments in Swatch Palette Vault. The searchable picker connects any Cut Setting Entry to an official Rasterizer swatch, so saved palettes no longer require renaming every entry. Name matches are still assigned automatically during import. Fauxlographic calibration separately uses the chosen base-setting entry from the selected material.

The Labels entry

A Cut Setting Entry named Labels has special meaning in Color Lab grids, Color Lab refinement grids, Fauxlographic Etching Lab calibration grids, and Material Coupons. It supplies a tested setting for generated text and identifiers rather than becoming an artwork color.

Those forms expose a Labels selector and automatically choose the Labels entry when it exists in the applicable material. You may select another entry when appropriate. Without a Labels entry, the workflow uses its first applicable or starting setting rather than inventing laser parameters.

Thickness values and duplicate descriptions

Rasterizer can import and use entries with no specified thickness or with a numeric LightBurn thickness. Matching is based on the selected material and the entry Description, not on requiring a particular thickness. Give each usable setting within that material a unique Description because duplicate matching descriptions remain ambiguous, even when the entries use different thickness values.

Sublayers

Ordinary Rasterizer layers preserve the imported Cut Setting's main layer and its sublayers. Krasnow Grating uses the Fauxlographic Cut Setting's main layer and ignores its sublayers. Color Lab and Fauxlographic Etching Lab calibration processing use the first sublayer when one is present; otherwise they use the Cut Setting's main layer. Review the resulting LightBurn project before running it.

Machine-specific settings

Power, scanning speed, pulse frequency, pulse duration, passes, line interval, scan angle, focus distance, and operation mode are machine- and material-dependent. Treat imported settings as starting data that requires validation on your equipment.
