How the Fauxlographic Etching Lab Helps

The Fauxlographic Etching Lab does not remove the physical uncertainty of structural color. It turns trial and error into a recorded calibration workflow so useful observations can be reviewed, exported or saved, and applied consistently to artwork.

It creates known experiments

The calibration profile records grid dimensions and the requested interval, scan angle, and optional setting sweep for each cell. Labels, fiducials, and the calibration identifier keep the physical test associated with the correct data. A dedicated Labels selector controls which trusted palette setting engraves the identifier without changing the cell sweep.

It connects observations to settings

Photo analysis samples the engraved grid using its saved layout. You can review measured colors and quality indicators, then retain trusted cells as fauxlographic swatches in a Fauxlographic Palette instead of relying on memory or handwritten coordinates alone.

It maps artwork systematically

When a Fauxlographic Palette is selected in Rasterizer, artwork is quantized against its measured fauxlographic swatch colors. The worker groups adjacent pixels and assigns geometry to swatch-specific LightBurn layers, carrying each swatch's embedded laser setting, interval, and angle into a project that can be inspected before production.

It preserves operator judgment

You still choose the base Material Library setting, label setting, photograph and viewing setup, reject unreliable samples, inspect the LightBurn project, and test the final material. The lab organizes evidence; it does not certify a color or a safe machine process.
