Challenges of Iridescent Laser Engraving

Producing an iridescent mark once is different from producing a controlled palette repeatedly. Small changes in the machine, surface, or observation setup can shift the result.

Many variables interact

Interval and scan angle interact with speed, power, frequency, pulse width, passes, focus, lens, and the material response. Changing one control may alter groove shape, heat accumulation, oxidation, or reflectivity rather than changing only hue.

Appearance depends on observation

Lighting direction, light-source spectrum, camera exposure, white balance, and viewing angle all affect the recorded color. Comparing tests captured under different conditions is like comparing paint samples under different lamps.

Repeatability is physical

Surface finish, contamination, coating thickness, workpiece flatness, focus drift, and machine condition can prevent a saved fauxlographic swatch from reproducing exactly. Fauxlographic swatches should be treated as measured starting points for a controlled setup, not guarantees.

Dense artwork has production costs

Small fauxlographic pixels and many measured colors can create numerous closed shapes and LightBurn layers. This may increase export size and the time LightBurn needs to frame, optimize, send, or start a job.
